How To Build A Dreamy Ethereal Flower Bouquet For Mom
Gift Guide For the Women Who Raised Us.

Happy Sunday!
This isn’t just your average shopping newsletter. Today, we’re getting our hands in something a little more delicate: DIY flower bouquets.. 💐 🌼 🌹 🌺 🌸 🌷
There’s something about a handmade gift that just feels right for Mother’s Day…thoughtful, personal, a little poetic.
First, a little backstory:
My mom is the ultimate bouquet maker. When I was younger, she’d set time aside to teach me how to build beautiful, balanced arrangements, how to choose blooms, tend to them, and treat each one like something sacred.
She’s always had a gift for beautifying any space she walks into. She sees the beauty in everything. It’s so pure.
She taught me early on: flowers are more than decoration. They’re memory holders. Mood-setters. Instant joy.
To this day, she still makes her own arrangements every Sunday, and every time, it brightens the entire room.

That love stuck with me. These days, I find myself obsessing over flower arrangements — especially now that spring is here.
A few things I’ve learned from her over the years: whether you’re arranging flowers for a friend, a shoot, or just to lift the mood of a random Tuesday, it always comes back to the same ingredients: texture, airiness, a little drama, and a container that doesn’t have to be a vase.
This year, we’re giving flowers, but not just any. We’re building bouquets that feel like art, memory, and love all in one. I’ve pulled inspiration from some of the arrangements my mom and I have made over the years, and some beautiful arrangements from some of my favorite florists. Plus step-by-step tips to help you build something truly special.
No florist required — just a little intention, a container you love, and flowers that make you feel something. 🌷
Flowers your mom will scream Yes! to.
Because maybe isn’t good enough.
This isn’t just a floral arrangement. It’s a story, a memory, a handmade moment your mom will keep coming back to, even after the petals fall. Here’s how I build a bouquet that feels ethereal, elevated, and entirely personal:
1. Pick a color story.

Choose 2–3 of your mom’s favorite colors for a bold, joyful bouquet — or go with one color in varying shades for something softer and dimensional. Think violet, fuschia, and a soft pink. Peach and coral. Lavender and lilac. White and green with one surprise bloom. Don’t overthink it, feel it.
If you’re unsure about color combos, here’s a tip:
Anything you find beautiful will work. That instinct is enough. But if you want to play with balance, use a color wheel. Pair opposites (like purple and yellow) for striking contrast, or choose neighboring tones (like blush, cream, and peach) for harmony.
Don’t overthink it — trust your eye. Let it be about feeling!
2. Choose your container — and skip the obvious.

It doesn’t have to be a traditional vase. In fact, I think it’s more interesting and personal when you use a random container that one would not think to use to host flowers! You can used vintage teapots, ceramic bowls, short pitchers, wide mugs, even a glass cookie jar. The quirkier the better, as long as it holds water and has a story, it works!
Here are some unique container recommendations:

For your convenience — for my New Yorkers (and nearby friends), every Mociun piece featured here is available for in-store pickup at their Brooklyn location. Not local? No stress. All of these shops offer fast shipping — some as quick as overnight.
3. Start with her favorite flowers.
Mix them in. This is about her. About what she loves. Even if you’re going full aesthetic, build it around something that feels familiar and hers.. My mom LOVES roses and lilies, so no matter the arrangement, there’s always at least one lily or rose (or both) tucked inside.
If you’re not sure what her favorite flower is (or she doesn’t have one) choose something that reminds you of her. Maybe it’s something soft and elegant, something bold and radiant, or something that just feels like home. Let your instinct lead.
Trader Joe’s always surprises me with their affordable, beautiful flower selection — ranunculus, tulips, hydrangeas, baby’s breath, even sunflowers. It’s a go-to.

4. Don’t forget the green.
Think eucalyptus, ruscus, dusty miller, or whatever’s lush and in season. Baby’s breath is another favorite: soft, ethereal, and instantly nostalgic. Also, leaves are your foundation. Greenery gives your bouquet fullness, breathability, and a bit of wild elegance. Let it spill. Let it soften the edges. Let it feel alive.
Going with an all green bouquet can work as well.
5. Trim like a pro.
It’s important to cut each stem at a diagonal before placing it in water. This helps them drink more and last longer. Bonus points if you remove any leaves that will sit below the waterline. They’ll rot and cloud the water if left on.
6. Feed them.
Flowers are living things. They need more than just water. Flower food helps keep them hydrated and blooming longer. Most pre-made bouquets come with a little packet, but you can also DIY your own.
All you need: sugar, citric acid (or lemon juice), and a splash of vinegar. This combo nourishes the flowers and keeps bacteria from taking over. Just mix into the water before placing your stems.
A little love goes a long way — and your bouquet (and your mom) will thank you.
7. Add a scent moment.
I never realized how powerful scent could be in a bouquet until I was gifted the most beautiful arrangement of white roses (see picture in step 4) — and the fragrance lingered for months, even after I dried the flowers and kept them as decoration. It completely shifted the way I think about florals.
Now, I always add a little something extra. You can mist your bouquet with a diluted fragrance spray, or go the natural route with essential oils. Add a few drops to the bottom of the stems before arranging. The flowers will gradually absorb the scent and release it over time. If you're using a concentrated oil, dilute it with water in a small spray bottle and gently spritz the petals or center of the blooms. Just avoid heavy perfumes; they can be too harsh for delicate flowers.
SilkyScents has a beautiful selection of essential oils (and if you order soon, they’ll arrive in time for Mother’s Day). A few picks:
Amber – warm, sensual, a little mysterious
Chamomile – soft, herbal, like a calming breeze
Coffee – cozy, rich, and grounding
Lavender French – clean, floral, timeless
Eucalyptus – crisp, fresh, and clearing
It’s a subtle touch, but it makes the entire bouquet feel elevated, intimate, and unforgettable.
8. Dress it up.
Wrap the container with a ribbon. Silk, straw, velvet — whatever feels right. This tiny touch gives it gift energy without going full florist mode.
9. Add your words.
Pair the bouquet with a handwritten note. Just a few words. Just enough to make her feel deeply seen.
10. Give it with care.
On Mother’s Day, deliver it like it’s something you’ve been quietly, lovingly working on for days — because you have.
Watch her face as she takes it in.
That’s the real gift.
Let it be imperfect. Let it be you.
Let it feel like love — because it is.
