Beyond the Big 4
Exploring Emerging Fashion Capitals – Where Will the Next Style Epicenter Emerge?
Greetings from the island of Jamaica! (Disclaimer: that’s not where I am in the picture lol).
But I am coming to you live from my vacation oasis, where the sun's been shining, so naturally, inspiration has hit me once again. I couldn’t help but notice all the diverse styles surrounding me on this beautiful & vibrant island and it’s got me thinking of a couple of things. First, it's fascinating to see how a particular region can shape people's fashion choices. Second, the fashion world really is a treasure trove of diversity, and it's so exciting to watch more and more cities rise up, gaining recognition for their one-of-a-kind style.
While New York, Paris, London, and Milan have long been the stars of the runway, it's time to venture beyond the big 4 and explore the rising stars of the fashion universe.
So for today’s article, I want to spotlight various cities that have been making bold statements in the industry.
As always, don't hesitate to drop a comment with your thoughts. Where do you think the next fashion capital might emerge?
Because I’m forever the jet setter, I’ve been thinking about where the next rising fashion city will be. Because wherever that is, that’s exactly where I want to be.
Have you ever wondered what's trending in Seoul, the heart of South Korea's fashion scene? Or how Lagos, Nigeria is redefining elegance with a touch of African flair?
Perhaps you're curious about Tokyo's unique street style or Copenhagen's commitment to sustainability?
Seoul, South Korea: K-Fashion's Global Ascent
Seoul … now this is a city that has been catching more and more of my attention.
This city has been making serious waves as the emerging fashion hot spot of Asia, and I can't help but wonder what's in the air there?? In this bustling city, young, innovative designers are thriving, and the best part is, you don't need to be the next Chanel or Prada to make your mark.
What’s truly captivating is Seoul's streetwear scene, where minimalistic yet visually striking styles are seen everywhere. To really understand a city’s fashion scene, you have to look at what’s being worn on the streets.
Korean brands like BLR, helmed by Gwon Bongseok, turned heads at this past Seoul Fashion Week with their edgy, high-fashion denim creations that could give global brands like Diesel a run for their money.
Seoul isn't just embracing fashion; it's redefining it. So, what do you think is next in their ever-evolving fashion story?
Lagos, Nigeria: Where African Elegance Takes Center Stage
Lagos, Nigeria— a city with style ingrained in its DNA. Is the world finally taking notice?
In Lagos, fashion isn't just a trend; it's a way of life. The vibrant and diverse fashion scene in this city is a reflection of its rich cultural tapestry. Lagosian fashion effortlessly blends traditional African elegance with contemporary trends, resulting in a fusion of styles. The city even has its own Fashion week, which is usually held in October.
Renowned designers from Lagos, like Kenneth Ize, Deola Sagoe, and Lisa Folawiyo, have been pushing the boundaries of creativity, and their creations are making waves far beyond Nigeria. I believe the fashion world's spotlight is shifting towards Lagos, and African fashion in general, recognizing its unique contributions to the industry.
Could Lagos be the next big thing in the world of fashion?
Tokyo, Japan: The Epicenter of Street Style
Another city whose fashion scene has always intrigued me is Tokyo, Japan. This city is famed for its cutting-edge street style, reflecting the creativity of its residents. When you stroll through neighborhoods like Harajuku and Shibuya, it's like stepping into a fashion amusement park. These districts are home to a plethora of independent shops, shopping malls, and concept stores, each offering a kaleidoscope of styles, ranging from traditional to futuristic.
Tokyo's street style is a reflection of its dynamic spirit, where fashion boundaries are pushed to their limits. Here, people blend avant-garde styles with tradition.
And it’s not just the street fashion that sets Tokyo apart; it's also its contribution to high fashion. Brands like Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake have their roots here, and they've left an indelible mark.
I’m yet to visit this city but it’s definitely on my bucket list. Maybe 2024?
Copenhagen, Denmark: Commitment to Sustainability
Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark and also its fashion capital. This place is known as one of the most sustainable cities in the world and this is reflected throughout their fashion scene.
Back in 2020, Copenhagen Fashion Week unveiled its ambitious sustainability action plan. This plan mandates that all brands on its schedule must meet 18 minimum requirements, spanning six key areas: strategic direction, design, smart material choices, working conditions, consumer engagement, and show production. It's an impressive commitment that took full effect during the Fall Winter 2023 fashion week, setting a remarkable example for the global fashion industry.
But that's not all that makes Copenhagen a standout in the fashion world. This city is known for its modern and functional Danish design, characterized by minimalism and a preference for natural materials like wood and leather. It's a blend of fashion and functionality that's both stylish and sustainable.
Copenhagen is also home to renowned labels like Ganni. As I explore this city's unique approach to fashion, I can't help but wonder how its dedication to sustainability might influence the broader fashion landscape. Could Copenhagen become the next major player, challenging the traditional fashion capitals?
So as I reflect on all these cities’ fashion scenes, I can't help but wonder which city might emerge as the next major style epicenter, perhaps even challenging the dominance of the Big 4.
The fashion world is in constant flux, and the future of style is full of exciting possibilities.
Where do you think the next fashion capital might emerge?
