“ethereal, theatrical, intriguing”
I am Gem, curator of word and likeness: a fashion industry and writing student who previously studied fashion design at an art school in Boston for two years. Being a thread in the embroidery of the arts orchestrated my interest in costume. A lifetime of ballet and reveling in live theater was formative and deeply relevant. I am indulgent in fantasy media and mindset, adoring the unreal, particularly in the form of narrative. Through ethos and aesthetics, Vivienne Westwood is my divine muse. Her framework, infused with historical fashion, enkindles my mindset—specifically the lavish garments of the Victorian era. Lace, leather, embellishments, tulle, satin, fur, and metal are the materials of my body and soul.
My Style
My voice and style are so intricately ingrained in my being that separation feels impossible. My inspirations guide me holistically, influencing not just my fashion choices but my way of life, rooted in a commitment to intrigue. These passions have led me to embrace gothic black in personal dress. I prefer my silhouette to be dramatically lavish, strikingly unreal. I am heavily jeweled, kept from the heavens by the weight of thickly layered silver and black crystal beads. The hidden mystery of lace and smoky eyes remains veiled behind expansive shades and faux fox fur. I cherish the extremity—the contrast of contraries defines me. All fashion is costume, and I am no exception.

“grounded, whimsical, empathetic”
Hi, my name is Lauren aka Ren! I’m a second-year Fashion Industry and Merchandising student at Drexel University. I was adopted from Zhengzhou, China, and have lived all along the East Coast, from Pennsylvania to Florida to North Carolina, before making my way back up here. My love for fashion began in childhood, with “big girl outfits” stolen from my sister’s closet. Those playful beginnings evolved when I got my first sewing machine, sparking a passion for creating garments that make the wearer feel like they’ve blossomed from the earth, transforming into something ethereal and alluring.
A fun fact about me is that I love going to the gym, which I view as essential for both mental and physical well-being. I live by the phrase, “Feel good, look good.” Another meaningful part of my identity is my nickname, “Ren,” inspired by the Confucian concept of “Rén,” which emphasizes respect, kindness, and compassion—values that shape how I interact with others and contribute to creating a positive environment.
My Style
When it comes to style, I’m drawn to simple, timeless pieces that I elevate with bold, eye-catching jewelry, like chunky rings, to add personality and flair. Lately, I’ve been exploring streetwear, incorporating unique statement pieces while staying true to my signature touches. My evolving style strikes a balance between freshness, authenticity, and individuality.
✎ Leah Caiola✎
“classic, refined, polished”
Hi everyone! My name is Leah, and I’m a second-year Fashion Industry & Merchandising student at Drexel University. I’m from Robbinsville, New Jersey, just about an hour from Philadelphia. My passion for fashion began in high school when I took a retail job at Windsor. That experience sparked my fascination with the fashion industry and its significant role in shaping our society. I’m thrilled to be joining Fashion Talk this season, where I can share my love for fashion and connect with a broader audience.
My Style
My style strikes a balance between timeless basics and bold, exciting accessories. This season, my go-to look often includes a black turtleneck, wide-leg jeans, and black boots. While that may sound simple, I elevate the outfit with gold earrings, bracelets, funky scarves, and unique purses. I love to refine my style regularly, and having quality staples in my wardrobe allows me to effortlessly experiment with new jewelry, hair accessories, outerwear, and more. This approach keeps my look fresh, dynamic, and uniquely mine.
✎ Samantha Hermans✎
“confident, evolving, nostalgic”
Hi, my name is Sammy, and I’m a senior studying Behavioral Economics with a minor in Merchandising. I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, which—fun fact—is the town that inspired Fleetwood Mac’s iconic song “Silver Springs!” "As a child, whenever someone asked what I wanted to be, my answer was always “A Fashionista,” and I would not accept any criticism regarding the validity of that profession. (And I still won’t!) My sisters and I exclusively watched 90s shows and movies and I formed my style from the influence of Rachel Green, Cher Horowitz, and Kat Stratford. These characters taught me the art of timeless fashion, adding a touch of eccentricity, and, of course, the importance of great hair.
My Style
My style is a constantly evolving extension of my personality. I love experimenting with textures and tones while incorporating details that reflect my unique perspective. My aesthetic leans toward sophistication with an edge—think sleek looks elevated by studs, leather accents, or bold elements. I draw inspiration from European fashion capitals, particularly Copenhagen and Paris. Copenhagen’s blend of athleisure, bright pops of color, and tailored suiting inspires me, while Paris’ effortless, calculated chic is something I aspire to emulate. At heart, though, I’m forever inspired by 90s fashion. My go-to outfit will always feature baggy jeans, a bulky leather jacket, and a choker—a perfect homage to the decade that defined my fashion DNA.
✎ Zayna Gilgeous ✎
“innovative, expressive, playful ”
Hi! My name is Zayna, and I’m a freshman Fashion Design student at Drexel University, originally from PG County, Maryland. My love for fashion started at a young age, heavily influenced by my family and cultural roots. My design interests span from edgy streetwear to sophisticated luxury, with a philosophy that prioritizes sustainability. Most of the pieces in my portfolio are crafted from repurposed materials, reflecting my commitment to eco-conscious design. Outside of fashion, I’m an avid traveler who loves exploring new places and cultures for inspiration.
My Style
Fashion is an avenue for me to communicate with others. My style has long been inspired by Black Streetwear, a foundation of creativity and self-expression that resonates deeply with me. From baggy pants to oversized hoodies, I’ve always been drawn to relaxed, bigger silhouettes. My go-to look usually features dark tones in my outerwear, paired with a pop of brightness in my casual shirts. To make my style truly my own, I love incorporating personal design elements. For instance, I recently gave new life to an old skirt by adding a fur trim, transforming it into something fresh and full of character. In essence, my style is a blend of comfortable construction with a playful, feminine touch brought to life through color and detail.
